REA Card brings YouLend financing to Germany's offline merchants

REA Card and YouLend launch embedded financing for German SMEs, with offers based on card revenue instead of bank credit checks.

REA Card brings YouLend financing to Germany's offline merchants

REA Card and YouLend have announced a strategic partnership to offer embedded financing to small and medium-sized businesses in Germany. REA Card is a German provider of POS terminals, cash register systems and SoftPOS solutions for stationary retail, with more than 25 years in the market. YouLend is one of the leading embedded financing platforms globally, providing financing infrastructure for platforms such as Amazon, Shopify and many more. Merchants using REA Card's payment products can now access YouLend financing offers directly, with decisions based on their actual card revenue rather than a traditional bank credit check.

Financing based on card revenue

The process follows the standard embedded finance playbook, where the merchant does not fill in a separate application but receives an offer generated from data the provider already holds. In this case, that data is the transaction history flowing through the merchant's terminal, and REA Card positions the capital product for inventory purchases, seasonal demand or growth investments.

The offline businesses banks don't serve

Typical REA Card terminal customers are restaurants, kiosks, retailers, taxi companies and hair salons. In other words, the stationary long tail of the German economy, and arguably a segment that hasn't had the best access to lending products. The financing amounts these businesses need are too small for banks to underwrite profitably, their financial records are often thin, and many of them ran on cash until not long ago, which means there was little usable data anywhere.

Luckily, payment behaviour is changing in Germany (according to a Bundesbank study, 2025 was the first year when people paid for everyday purchases more often without cash than with it), which means the terminal has become the one place generating structured revenue data for these businesses. A hair salon may not have audited accounts for the past few months, but it has months of card transactions sitting in its payment provider's systems. Most embedded lending stories in Europe run through online platforms and their sellers, and it's great to see that traditional offline businesses also get similar funding access.

From payment terminal to financial product channel

Financing is also not the first extended financial product REA Card has attached to its terminals this year. In February, the company launched REA Kaufschutz, a purchase protection service that covers goods bought at a REA Card terminal against damage or theft. Additionally, REA Card said it is planning 'a deeper integration' of the financing product into REA Card's existing product portfolio. The two companies did not explain what that means in the announcement, but perhaps it includes pre-approved loans inside the cash register software.
